This documentation is an attempt to compress a lot of information into a small space so it leaves a bit to be desired. The real manual is jam packed with illustrations and information.
Use FONT/DA Mover to install DeskPaint as a Desk Accessory. Copy the DeskPaint DEMO suitcase and the two files:
"DeskPaint.DOCS.TEXT"
"DeskPaint.DOCS.MPNT"
over to your system disk. Double click on the Suitcase and install on your system. Use DeskPaint to read the MacPaint file.
LOADING DeskPaint™
DeskPaint may be invoked at any time from any application that allows desk accessories. Just select DeskPaint from the Apple menu. It may also be loaded as an application by double-clicking on the DeskPaint Icon (only in the real version).
USING THE CLIPBOARD
If there is anything on the clipboard, it will be converted to a bit image and placed in the DeskPaint window for editing. Press the Delete key to remove it. **** THE CLIPBOARD DOES NOT WORK IN THIS DEMO COPY SO YOU CANNOT EXPORT GRAPHICS TO YOUR APPLICATIONS. IT WORKS GREAT IN THE REAL VERSION ******
HIDING TOOLS
To hide the graphic tools and make more room for editing, click Hide. Click Show to bring tools back.
Press the Tab key to hide or show patterns.
LOADING FILES
DeskPaint will load MacPaint images and TIFF images (both uncompressed and Group 3 compressed).
Select Open... from the DeskPaint menu to load files. You can load TIFF, TIFF Group 3 (compressed) and MacPaint™ type files created with SuperPaint™, FullPaint™, MacPaint, Scanners, etc.
SAVING FILES
DeskPaint will Save images in MacPaint, TIFF or TIFF Compressed formats. **** DISABLED IN THIS DEMO VERSION *******
Use SCAN... to browse through Paint and TIFF files. Select SCAN SCRAP... to browse scrapbook files. The NEXT button browses forward through files, PREV goes backwards. Click STOP once to view, twice to edit the image. Select the SCAN button to view another folder or file. Use AUTO for slide-show viewing. (Press number keys 0-9 for delay in seconds between images). Use Command + or -- to zoom in or out while browsing files. Use "Option Key" to move image with hand.
Moves the viewing area in the direction of the mouse. Option key always brings up hand. Dbl-click to Zoom-out.
TEXT TOOL
Brings up the Text tools described on following pages.
ZOOM
Position tool where you want an enlarged view click the mouse. Hold-in Command key to Zoom-out. Actual size shown under the tools. (Tab key hides patterns.) Double-click pencil for normal size. Use Command +/- for fast keyboard zoom in or zoom out.
PAINT BUCKET
Fills an enclosed area with the current fill pattern.
LINES
Draw lines at any angle. Use Shift key to constrain to vertical or horizontal lines. Draws in current Line height, width & pattern.
Line pattern is selected by holding in the Option key while clicking a Pattern, Black, White or NiL (NiL is transparent or clear and is like none with MacPaint).
LINE SIZE AND SHAPE
Select Line Height and Width for Line, Polygon, Rectangle(s) and Circle tools. Click left side for height, right for width, center for both. This tool also creates the Brush and Eraser shapes.
PENCIL
Use the pencil for freehand drawing. Draws in black if on white, white if on black background. Double-clicking the pencil toggles FatBits/Actual size. Shift key is used to constrain Pencil movement to horizontal and vertical planes.
PAINT BRUSH
Paints in the current pattern. Brush size and shape is two times (2X) the Line height and width selector. The Shift key is used constrain movement to horizontal and vertical planes.
ERASER
Erases black pixels under the eraser. Eraser size and shape is two times (2X) the Line height and width selector. Double-click to erase everything. The Shift key is used to constrain erasure to horizontal and vertical planes.
POLYGON, CIRCLE, ROUND CORNERED RECTANGLE AND RECTANGLE
Create shapes filled with the current pattern and outlined in the current line height, width and pattern. Shift key: Draw perfect circles and rectangles. Use Shift key for freehand polygons.
SELECTION TOOL AND LASSO
Selection Tool selects rectangular areas using the copy modes above. Double-click to select entire window. Lasso selects only graphics and enclosed white areas.Use the Shift key to outline with straight lines.
*When graphics are selected with the Lasso or Selection tools
these special tools will appear:
*INVERT
Reverses image
*FREE ROTATE
Rotates image in
small increments.
*COPY MODES
Opaque, Transparent, XOR, BIC ETC. (Option key selects NOT modes)
*SCREENING IMAGES
The Black and White arrows let you Lighten or darken the area in the current pattern. Press arrows to increment through patterns automatically.
Click on a pattern square or on a pattern box directly for Brush and Fill pattern. Hold in the Option key when selecting patterns to select LINE PATTERN. Click NEXT to view the other four pattern sets (Option NEXT to get the system pattern). Tab key hides patterns.
To Create New Patterns:
1. Draw pattern in regular or fatbits mode in window.
2. Select that pattern area with the Selection Tool.
3. Hold in Command key and double click on a pattern square.
Current patterns are shown in the upper pattern selection box. Right side is Fill and Brush pattern. Left side is Line pattern.
The little Black indicators specify current LINE PATTERN (left) and FILL/BRUSH PATTERN (right) . NiL is Clear or none. Use Option key to select Line pattern (or click left side near LINE PATTERN indicator).
First Select the the text tool (the big "Z" in the upper left hand corner). The text tools when then appear and you are in text modes.
ENTERING TEXT
Click-and-drag the mouse to create a text area rectangle (field). Position the cursor in the field and enter and edit text as you would many other Macintosh text editors.
Clicking outside of the rectangle will enter the text as a graphic image so don't do that until you're done editing and positioning your text.
FONTS
When in text mode the DeskPaint Menu contains the system fonts.
STYLES
Select desired style from the style tools. More than one may be selected.
JUSTIFY
To change text justification select Left, Right or Center.
POINT SIZES
Change text size by clicking the arrows. Bold numbers indicate system sizes (looks better on the screen). Shift-Command < or > for two point increments. Option-arrows for ten point increments.
POSITIONING TEXT FIELDS
To move a text field first select the "Hand", then select inside the text field to move it to the desired position.
Trick: If you position the cursor near the inside edge of the text rectangle, and the cursor turns to a hand, press the mouse button to move the field about. Be careful not to click too far outside the field as the text will be entered. Practice with it.
RESIZING A TEXT FIELD
To resize the text field "Grab" the grow box and adjust. Word-wrap will occur automatically.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT ENTERING TEXT
When entering text you may change styles, fonts, justification, size and the text field may be repositioned and sized.
But once the text is "Entered" it becomes graphics and cannot be edited again.
Text is entered by clicking the paint brush tool or by clicking outside of the text rectangle. Undo removes entered text.
These menu items offer a number of powerful tools for Desk Top Publishers.
LASER SCALE
When this menu item is checked, images copied to the clipboard will print correctly on the LaserWriter.
Works extremely well with Scanned images with grey-patterns using Command < & > (scales selection by 50% & 200% and retains detail in PICT format).
WINDOW GRID
This feature gives you a one inch background grid. To change grid size adjust DPI. To get a half-inch grid for a 300 Dot Per Inch image, use 150 DPI.
MOUSE GRID (SNAP-TO)
Constrains tools to an 8x8 pixel grid. Makes it easier to keep things aligned and is also useful for technical drawings and special effects.
PRINT
Used for printing to the Image-Writer. Hold in the mouse button to halt printing for the Imagewriter. Press Command period for the LaserWriter.
DISABLE UNDO
Disables Undo to free up memory for larger images. Improves speed in some cases.
DeskPaint™ IMAGE INFORMATION MENU ITEM
* IMAGE TYPE: Select this item (or Command I ) to view the dialog box above. There are two basic graphic types, MacPaint and TIFF. A MacPaint image is depicted above with a 576x720 image (8x10 inches at 72 DPI). TIFF images may be as large as memory will allow.
* DOTS PER INCH: Marks TIFF files for sizing. Also may used used to change the Window Grid. With 72 DPI images 18 DPI would show quarter-inch grids.
* PIXEL HEIGHT AND WIDTH: You may change the size of the image by adjusting the pixel width or height. Limit of 4000 (memory permitting).
* IMAGE SIZE IN BYTES: Actual size of image. This is uncompressed memory size not file size.
* FREE MEMORY IN BYTES: Amount of free memory available for processing images. Run the DeskPaint Icon to get maximum memory.
